Facing Myths About Homeschooling

This week, on The Parents' Solution, I had an inspirational conversation with Kristy Boyd Johnson and Alysia Seymour. These two friends have joined together to create Barefoot Learning Club, which is a fun, hands-on homeschooling program designed for children in the pre-Kindergarten age group to grade 3.
We enjoyed a candid discussion about the public school experience from the perspective of Kristy, an educator who had been working in the system from the 80’s. Alysia also shared her honest initial thoughts about homeschooling and the resistance that she noticed from her children and herself at the beginning of her homeschooling journey. Alysia offered deep insight on building a healthy homeschool balance and learning through the process.
We addressed common homeschooling myths such as:
- What if I get it wrong and mess up my kids?
- I don’t know how to homeschool.
- I’m going to go crazy with having my kids home all day.
- I’m worried that my child won’t be socialized.
For those of you parents or caretakers who feel anxious or fearful regarding stepping out on your homeschool journey, Alysia offers great encouragement:
“Pathways will open that you didn’t see before. It will probably turn into something better than you could’ve ever imagined because you followed the calling. There is always a way. Just step out of the mind blocks.”
Kristy said, “There is no mystery about teaching. It’s only a mystery in your mind.”
At times we find ourselves at a crossroads as parents and caregivers because we want the very best for our children. We value the quality of education and because we do so, we must decide what we are willing to change, reschedule and sacrifice for our children to have access to the finest educational programming possible. Don’t be afraid of the crossroad, or the choices you have to make. Don’t be afraid of stepping outside of the box and looking for alternatives that best fit your child’s needs. Not only does this learning process inspire growth for the child in your care, but it also encourages growth for you.
